Our journey started in 2019. We were three friends challenged with health issues - poor sleep, up and down mood, IBS and digestive health issues and weight. Our research pointed us to one root cause - gut health!
Our journey started in 2019. We were three friends challenged with health issues - poor sleep, up and down mood, IBS and digestive health issues and weight. Our research pointed us to one root cause - gut health!
Through our research we discovered the incredible health and well-being benefits of prebiotic fibre and that chicory root fibre is the best source of prebiotics with over 4,000 research studies. We were intrigued to experience if it would make a difference for us.
Within a few short weeks of using chicory root fibre we were in awe of the noticeable improvements in our health and wellness.
When co-founder Mohsin realised he could eat his ‘trifecta of hell’ (a cheese and onion sandwich), we really knew that the chicory root fibre was doing something special.
In fact, we said, ‘This is so great, we should bottle it.’ So. we did just that - and the idea of ió fibrewater was born.
Fast-forward two years of research and development and 27 recipes (and a pandemic) later, we launched ió fibrewater in May, 2022.
We believe the rave reviews from our ió lovers says it all. And our multiple awards for innovation and Glasgow Caledonian University study proving ió fibrewater increases healthy gut bacteria significantly, just goes to show that going with our gut was the right thing to do!
In 2025, we gave our branding a face lift, and changed our name to ió Gut Health Drink to better reflect the wide range of health benefits our functional drink offers.

Making a positive difference in people's health and well-being is important to us, and prebiotics are a great way to do just that, as they are such an incredible super food!
Helping people access a way to ‘do your body good’ that is simple and convenient to incorporate into daily living through the scientifically proven ‘power of prebiotics’ is a core component to our mission.
Awards & recognition
Since we launched in May 2022, we won the Scottish Edge Wildcard Award for innovation. We were finalists for the EU Drinks Innovation Campus (DICA) and the regional winner (Scotland) for The Pitch.
We were also finalists for the Innovation of the Year Award for the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards for our collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University - which proved that ió increased friendly gut microbes (probiotics) significantly.
In March 2023 we won the World Food Innovation Award for Best Drink Innovation. In April 2023, we were a finalist for the Scotland Drinks StartUp Awards and we won the Corporate Highwire Innovation and Excellence Award for Beverage Company of the Year.
